How Built Scaled Creative Without Adding Headcount

As a leading construction and real estate finance platform, Built needed a design partner who could deliver a wide range of skills and high quality design at scale.

Built Technologies is a real estate and construction finance cloud platform. When they came to Teamtown, they had a small team of internal designers and more design work than that team could handle.

The Problem

Built's designers were at capacity. Requests came in from demand gen, product marketing, and events faster than the team could clear them, and every unplanned campaign pushed something else back. Senior designers spent their days on resizes and collateral instead of the campaign work they were hired for.

Built looked at the usual fixes first. Hiring was hard to justify: design volume spiked around launches and events, then dropped, and a full-time salary doesn't flex with that curve. Freelancers rarely had availability on a one or two day turnaround, and each new one had to learn the brand before producing anything usable. Agencies wanted scoped projects, with timelines and pricing that didn't fit fast production work.

What Built wanted was overflow capacity: a team that learns the brand once and absorbs the spikes, so the internal designers get their time back.

The Solution

Built found Teamtown through our article on Creative as a Service and signed up for a design subscription: a flat monthly fee for a dedicated team, with no hiring involved.

Teamtown assigned Built the same project manager, creative lead, and designers for the whole engagement. They learned the brand during onboarding and never needed a re-brief. Overflow work went to Teamtown through a request portal, with daily updates and quick answers over Slack. Anyone at Built could submit a request directly, so nothing queued behind the internal designers.

The internal team went back to brand and campaign work. Teamtown took the production volume: presentations, animations, videos, and marketing collateral. When demand rose or fell, Built adjusted the subscription to match.

Results

  1. Output doubled with the same internal team. Built estimates their creative output doubled, and possibly tripled, once Teamtown started absorbing the overflow. No headcount request was ever needed.
  2. Internal designers got their time back. With production handled, Built's designers work on strategy and campaign creative instead of clearing a queue. Sean Richardson, Built's Head of Demand Gen, called submitting and managing requests through the portal "a breeze," and said even urgent requests were prioritized well.
  3. Capacity moved with demand. Built scaled the engagement up for launches and events and back down in quieter months, for everything from single-image requests to large animation projects.
  4. A full event, delivered. For Built's kickoff conference, Teamtown produced the event branding and materials while Built's team focused on content delivery. That project alone would have tied up the internal designers for weeks.

Key Benefits

  • Built added output without adding headcount. A flat subscription replaced the salary, benefits, and hiring risk of growing the team.
  • The brand was learned once. A consistent team means no re-briefing freelancers and no surprises in quality.
  • Assets came back fast, sometimes within 24 hours, which mattered for the tight timelines that used to bury the internal team.
  • One subscription covered presentations, animation, video, and event branding. No single hire covers that range.

By the Numbers

  • Projects completed in first year: 247
  • Cost savings in first year: $275,000
  • Average design rating: 5/5 stars
  • Users submitting requests: 10
